Northern Lapland



Saariselkä Chapel
Was completed on 16.11.1996. Chapel was consecrated by Bishop Olavi Rimpiläinen. Altarpiece is a window to the surrounding nature.

Service is held every Sunday at 7 p.m. and during the high season occasions on every evening.



Nellim
The village of Nellim is situated by the Lake Inari ca. 40 km from Ivalo village close to the Russian border. Originally Nellim is an Inari Sámi village. In 1920’s and 1930’s Finns game for forest work and later Skolt Sámi from Petsamo moved to Nellim because of the wars in 1940’s. Nowadays Nellim is known as a meeting point of three cultures.




The famous island “Ukko” (Äijih)
Ukonkivi/ “Ukko” Island is situated about 11 km from the village of Inari at Lake Inari. It is an ancient sacrificial site of the Inari Sámi.  Sacrifices of food, game birds, horns and even jewellery were all taken to Ukonkivi, the dwelling place of thunder, to ensure good hunting.




Siida

Siida is the home of the Sámi Museum, Northern Lapland Nature Centre and Restaurant Sarrit. With its cultural and nature exhibitions, a meeting place and an exhibition center.

The joint exhibitions of the Museum and nature centre will show how nature and people have adapted to the extreme conditions of the Northern environment. Wonderful photographs, videos, dioramas, sound capes and original artefacts guide you between the seasons and back through past times. Also temporary exhibitions on current issues.

The Outdoor Museum was founded in 1959 and it is still open in summer. In the open-air museum, the visitor can have a look at old Sámi dwellings and trapping and fishing gear.



Utsjoki church and church houses

Utsjoki Church was built in 1850-1853 and it is the fourth church in Utsjoki. Old church houses are from the 19th century.  All the 14 church houses have been renovated.
