MUSEUMS IN LAPLAND
School Museum
Located in the old school of Alkkula. The museum covers a period in
Ylitornio from travelling tuition school services to the founding of an
elementary school. The museum has a real atmosphere of times gone by
and enhanced by numerous objects, books and pictures. There is also the
Opintiet Ylitorniolla Exhibition that tells about the history of
educational establishments from the elementary school to the present
day, including e.g. a vegetable garden and cooking school that provided
tuition into growing vegetables and aromatic herbs. The exhibition has
factual information, books, pictures and various items.

Iikan Tupa and Katajan
Pirtti Museum
Iikan Tupa is a summer field cabin that houses the Museum of the Author
Väinö Kataja. The cabin is located on the Nuotioranta shore in the old
mill site, of which Kataja has written.
The cabin has an old southern Lapland style farmhouse living room,
furnished in the late nineteenth century style, Ylitornio-style
furniture traditions, the bedroom is furnished as Kataja’s Room that
holds all available information about Kataja and her work. The grounds
also have a restored nineteenth century watermill.
Open during the summertime by arrangement.
Aine Art Museum
Art collection is from the Aine Visual Arts Foundation collection. Itis
a collection of Finnish arts from the beginning of the 19th century
up until the present. In addition to its basic collection, the museum
arranges various national and international displays. From the
cafeteria of the Art Museum there is a view of the Town Bay and over
the border to Sweden. An auditorium for 110 people.

Rovaniemi Art Museum
The museum is located in a classy renovated and restored postal depot.
The main focus of activities is on Finnish modern art, northern art,
the art of the indigenous peoples and community and environmental art.
Einari Junttila Art Museum
at centre of Kittilä. One of the most famous and oldest artist in Lapland, whose paintings portray Lappish nature. Einari Junttila (1901-1975) renowned watercolour artist of the 1930s, took his subject matter the fells, forest ponds, streams, bogs and river meadows of his native Kittilä.

Reidar Särestöniemi Art Museum
Reidar Särestöniemi (1925-1981), one of the most famous painter of Lapland, lived in the village of Kaukonen, 40 km south of Levi. His works present Lapland in past. Särestö´s works are a declaration of love for northern nature and are imbued with his most tender and painful feelings, his style ranging from a sophisticated elegance to a strong expressionism.
Location: Village of Kaukonen. Drive about 40 km south from Levi to
Village Kaukonen. Turn to left to Särestöniemi. Drive along the road
approx. 9 km.
